THE CHAOS CHRONICLES

SUNBORN

Mission: travel to a nebula called Starmaker. Find what is threatening not just the star nursery, but every world within a thousand light-years.

John Bandicut deserves a rest. Rescuing Earth from a wayward comet wasn't accomplishment enough, and neither was saving two other worlds from imminent disaster. Exiled from his homeworld and traveling with an eclectic group of aliens—including a quarx in his head—he has been plucked from one mission to another, and from one end of the galaxy to another. He and his companions are tired. Would it be too much to ask for a little R&R?

Apparently so. When they arrive at an interstellar waystation, they find that it's being hammered by hypergravity shock waves originating in nearby Starmaker, better known to Bandicut as the Great Orion Nebula. What's the cause? No one knows. But they need to find out, not only because their present shelter is threatened with destruction, but because sentient stars in the nebula are dying. And the danger could cascade across thousands of light-years, threatening uncounted worlds—including Earth.

Aboard a ship called The Long View, Bandicut and his band of exiles journey not just into the perils of a star-forming nebula, but into confrontation with a billion-year-old adversary of life as they know it. Whatever chance they have of stopping the terrifying Mindaru may be found only in the fiery heart of an intelligent sun.

You may be wondering...

Why did this book take so freaking long to get written?

Clicking the above link will take you to the blog entries that tell some of the saga of my getting this book finished. I know—it's a long wait for a book that's already been long delayed. Believe me, no one is more eager to see this book in print than I am. I just have to ask you to be patient a little longer! I hope you'll find it worth the wait.

Meanwhile, here's a hint of what is to come (subject to change, in the later books):

  • SUNBORN — Bandicut & Co. find themselves smack in the middle of a stellar nursery. Strange goings on in space-time. A robot named Jeaves, from humanity's future. Sentient stars in peril. and the company must learn why. And for Julie Stone, an unexpected mission.

  • THE REEFS OF TIME — A multiple-sun star system is in peril, and humanity may be the cause.

  • MASTERS OF SHIPWORLD — Bandicut and company are determined to learn who or what has been controlling their lives. The answers—and the questions—may teach them unexpected insights into themselves.

    BATTLESTAR GALACTICA:
    The Miniseries

    Now Available!

The SciFi Channel's new hit series, Battlestar Galactica, is loosely based on the original 1978 series, but very different in tone and character. If you're a fan, come relive the four-hour miniseries that kicked it off. If you've never seen the TV show, this is a great introduction to a very human cast of characters, struggling to lead humanity to survival in the face of attempted genocide. The Cylons are far more than chrome toasters now; they're all too nearly human, and they have a deadly agenda.

This was my first movie novelization. I loved the miniseries, and I had a terrific time writing this. Read some of my thoughts on the writing process in my blog, particularly the entry:
